Please give us a short summary of your website?
Analytical Investing provides quantitative analysis of over 7000 publicly-traded stocks.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I am a statistician who has had a lifelong interest in the stock market, and after 25 years in corporate America, I decided it was time for me to start a second career in stock market research.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
This is my first web site, and it was launched in February, 2004.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
The name for my web site (and my business) pretty accurately describes what I do.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
I think that a completely quantitative approach to analyzing fundamentals is somewhat unusual, as is the model that makes precise predictions about the future level of the S&P 500.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
I enjoy stock market research too much to give it up. Hopefully I can make enough money to live on before too long.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
So far, I have invested huge amounts of time & money in this endeavor, with modest results so far. Nevertheless, I am very optimistic, as success is impossible without taking risks.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would add sections to the web site for industry analysis and market analysis. I would also add sample portfolios to accomodate different investing styles.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
I was pretty optimistic while developing the site, so the web site should be able to handle a very large number of users without difficulty. If it ever gets to the point where it can't handle the demand, that means I'll be making plenty of money to beef it up.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
The cost of initially developing the site was outrageous, and I spent way too much marketing the site in its early days.
What has been your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge has been trying to get noticed in an ultra-competitive business. I try to keep my site (and my marketing) low-key, in contrast to my many competitors who trumpet get-rich-quick investment schemes.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Pay per click has probably generated the best results, but it still never generated enough business to pay for itself. I'm now trying to get the site known through other means, such as publishing articles.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
The biggest surprise has been the large cost and difficulty of directing traffic to the site.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
The site has been up and running since 2004, and I hope to operate it for many years.
