Please give us a short summary of your website?
ETF Investing is a resource for stock/bond investors following a diversified buy & hold strategy through funds that trade in stock exchanges, such as ETFs and CEFs, with tutorials, information, examples, calculators, etc.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I think a lot of people (like myself) suits that category of investor, but there are few websites tailored for us. With the resources gathered for my own investments I knew I could put together an interesting site. Besides, I have always enjoyed researching and writing tutorials.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
In 1997, it was my small-company's website, which promotes the electronic signs I market here in Argentina.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
Firstly I was looking for something short that could be remembered, so I chose "ETF Investing". But that had little meaning for much of the target audience, as they don't know what ETFs are. So I followed it by the motto "Your guide to diversified stock-market investments", which is descriptive for that audience without using many words, and serves SEO purposes too.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
It focuses on a buy & hold strategy, so beginners don't have to delve through focused/frequent trading resources that are not convenient for them as they are not going to dedicate much time for their investments, and probably lack the required expertise too. Moreover, the site has and will have relevant information and tools that are seldom found elsewhere.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
I would like to reach a point in which it can be considered a coherent guide for its niche, because right now it does have articles but not enough for that. In other words, I am designing a guide "bottom-up". I would like to see that guide take form, so that people can find there most of the knowledge they need for investing intelligently. Personally, I hope such a product, if it turns to be good, can provide me an adequate source of advertising income.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
I am just starting, so there weren't monetary returns yet, and the guide is still in its infant stage.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
If I invested more money into this, I guess I would use it for inclusion in quality paid directories.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
I haven't implemented features that require much maintenance, such as user-created content, to prevent that.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
The time required for designing the site and promoting it shouldn't be underestimated, but I guess I kind of expected that, so there weren't any unexpected headaches to mention.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Promoting the site in a way that is adequate for the target audience.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
reddit.com has been a good source of visitors for some articles. Regarding organic traffic, google has been the best.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
I was looking forward to google indexing the whole site more easily. It seems my promoting efforts are lagging behind my content-creation ones.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
It has been up for little more than a month. I will continue for at least 8-12 months, and evaluate results then.
