Please give us a short summary of your website?
InformedTrades is an online video trading news and education site for active traders of the stock, futures, and forex markets.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I have worked in finance for a number of years and feel that while there is a lot of education out there for traders most of it is low quality or way overpriced. This combined with the fact that I think there is an opportunity to combine a lot of good free information into one place in order to help people learn to trade.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
InformedTrades was launched in November 2007 and this is my first site.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
I wanted something that was easy to remember and got the point across so people would know what the site basically was about when people heard it.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
Most people charge for the level of education that InformedTrades puts out in our videos for free. In addition to this we constantly search the internet for the best free information and videos on trading which we pull into the site, giving traders the opportunity to learn not only from our site but from others as well.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
To build the site up to the point where it is well known and has a large community of traders contributing.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
The software that I am using is pretty inexpensive and so I have not had to put a lot of money into the site. There is a lot of time devoted to it however and definitely this is a site where the more time we put into it the larger its success will be.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would put a lot more money into advertising and hire additional staff to put out more free educational videos.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Yes. We use vbulletin as our content management system which is very scalable and we could easily hire more staff to help us moderate the site if necessary.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Not too many luckily. Shooting the videos was a little more difficult than I was expecting but other than that things have been pretty smooth.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Figuring out how to get traffic without much of an advertising budget.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Creating quality free videos has built a lot of buzz and brought a lot of traffic to the site.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
Its been pretty in line with my expectations.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
The site has been live for 3 months and, although I have been very happy with the traffic so far, I would stay with the site for 1 year even if I become unhappy with the sites performance.
Is there anything you would like to say to people who read this interview?
If you are interested in stock, futures, and/or forex trading and looking for a well managed site with quality educational videos and market news all free of charge then I encourage you to visit InformedTrades.com and join our growing community.
